The course

Course description

This is a flat course on tarmac and is a creative variant of an 'out and back' route involving a park section and a heritage cycle route section.
We start close to the community/café building in the centre of the park running two sides of the square field to the corner of Lakeside school. The route turns right onto the wide cycle route and parkrunners must keep to the right towards the lake and the first turn point. After the turn take in the excellent views of the lake and return to the corner of Lakeside school. From there we exit the park and from this point keep left following a long 'out and back' along the heritage cycle route turning around just after Kiwi House. Once the turn around point is reached you are half way and simply retrace the route via the lake turn and back to the finish close to where you started in the centre of the park.

On the course

The course is 5k long. The course is at Alvaston Park, Derby. The course is run entirely on tarmac paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

There are public toilets in the community building in the centre of the park, where our parkrun start/finish is. In the summer months changing facilities/showers may be available. The park also has children’s play areas (including one right next to the start), a lake where you can feed ducks, a BMX bike course, tennis courts and football pitches (children’s football training overlaps with parkrun between Sep-Mar).

More details

Public transport

Bus: There are two bus stops very close to each other on London Road which drop off at different entrances to the park: ‘Alvaston Park’ (Lakeside School entrance - closest to the start) and ‘Meadow Lane’ (Alvaston Park car entrance). These stops between them are served by Arriva bus services 1, 1A, 4, 73, 73A, 244 and also the Skylink bus service for East Midlands Airport.

Train: The closest rail station is Derby. It is 1.8 miles from the Pride Park exit to the parkrun start via the path up the side of the Derwent river.

Bicycle: Three Sustrans cycle routes go through the park. The off-road Derwent river path (Route 6) connects Derby City Centre and Long Eaton. The old Chellaston canal way (Route 6) out to Melbourne is part of our parkrun route. Route 66 from Spondon/Chaddesden passes an entrance to the park off the Raynesway dual carriageway bridge.

On foot

There are five footpaths into the park:

  1. Via the cycle highway (Route 6) that our course goes down. You get to this via the bridge next to Wickes or various places further up e.g. at Aldi (Harvey Road).
  2. Via the path down the side of Lakeside school which goes straight to the community building where the start is.
  3. Derwent river path coming from the Football Stadium and Derby Arena.
  4. Derwent river path (can be accessed off the Raynesway dual carriageway bridge) coming from the direction of Elvaston Country Park.
  5. The car entrance for the park which is signed “National BMX Track” off London Road.
By road

From outside Derby, you can follow signs to the football stadium until you arrive at Pride Park.
From the City Centre follow the A6 through Pride Park towards London Road. Turn left at Dunelm roundabout onto London Road.

Please DO NOT park in the car park in Alvaston Park itself - this is reserved for use by other groups with a prior agreement to use the park. Car parking is available at two locations, and you should allow 10 minutes to walk to the start from either of the following Car Parks.

Pride Park, Park and Ride. Access is from Derwent Parade and the car park is behind the football Stadium DE24 8BW (cost £3 for the day). This is ideal if you want to stay longer in the park. Park in the section of the car park closest to the river. To get to the start, leave on foot via the exit near the river, turn right and follow the path (650m) along the riverside until you enter the corner of Alvaston Park. The starting point is near the café building, located beyond the lake at the centre of the park.

London Road Derby Homes Depot DE24 8UZ opposite Wickes. This is a free car park with limited spaces (100) and limited duration. Our volunteers will let you in and out of the car park. The car park will open at 8:15, and the last entry is at 8:50 before the run. Please note that it will be locked from 8:50 to 9:50, so there will be no entry or exit during that hour. The car park closes at 10:30, so we kindly ask that all cars are out by then.
Everyone using this car park is asked to observe the following:

  • Cars are parked at your own risk
  • Obey the one-way system and speed limits
  • Please give way to footpath users when exiting the car park
  • Please exit left due to the nearby cycle exit
  • Do not block Derby Homes vehicles in
  • Do not park in any coned-off areas (on your left as you enter the car park) or in front of garage doors

To get to the start, leave on foot via the car park entrance, turn left, and then turn left again near the bus shelter after the school. The start is near the café building in the centre of the park.

Course safety

Alvaston parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • It is not permitted to run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
  • parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.

We hope these tips help to ensure that Alvaston parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
