The course

Course description

The start is about half way up the sports field behind the pavilion. It is on the left hand side of the field if you are walking from the pavilion, and on the right hand side of the field if you are walking from the athletics track.
The course is mainly flat and mostly on grass with a section on a new tarmac path. It consists of two anticlockwise loops of the field with the finishing area approximately where the start is.

On the course

The course is at Charlton Sports Fields, Charlton, Andover. The course is 2000m (2K) long. This has been accurately measured by us with a professional measuring wheel. The course is run on a mixture of grass and tarmac paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Marshals will be located along the course.

The course will be marshalled so that juniors will be in sight of a marshal at all times.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. Please give way to other park users. This won't slow you down and will help ensure the overall success of the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

Pavilion café with toilets, serving hot and cold drinks and refreshments - however this does not open before the event starts. Children’s play area.

Disabled access to the pavilion is good, however wheelchair users may find it difficult to reach the start finish area, especially in bad weather, as this is on a field. There is a path that runs beside the field that could give access to disabled spectators if the field is not accessible.

More details

Public transport

The nearest bus stop is on Foxcotte Road. There is also a bus stop by the Tesco store in Charlton which is approximately half a mile from the start. The nearest train station is Andover train station.

On foot

The start point can be accessed by foot from four directions:
From Portway Industrial Estate via the road that leads past The Sports Academy to the athletics track. There is a footpath that leads from the road between the athletics track carpark and the overflow carpark down through the park. Follow this path past the first sports field and head towards the pavilion. The start point is in the field to the left of the path just before the crazy golf/pavilion.
From the corner of Harrow Way/Upper Drove. At the corner where Harrow Way turns into Upper Drove there is a footpath leading to the pavilion. Follow the path between Harrow Way School and the Basepoint Business Centre then down through the middle of the pitch and putt course and the pavilion will be straight in front of you. The start point is in the field behind the pavilion.
From Foxcotte Road. There is a path leading from Foxcotte Road, just by the parking area directly to the pavilion. This is signposted both “Charlton Sports and Leisure Centre” and “Charlton Lakeside”. The start point is in the field behind the pavilion.
From Charlton Village (Tesco area). Take the road/path on the Andover side of the Tesco store, signposted “Charlton Lakeside” and “Charlton Sports and Leisure Centre”. Follow this past the Salto Centre and carry on to the entrance to the Lakeside carpark. Take either route (either past the barrier or through the carpark) and follow the path/road to the pavilion. The start point is in the field behind the pavilion.

If travelling from the train station: come out of the station onto Station Approach, turn left and follow the road to the T junction (a car lot will be on your left and a small row of shops in front of you. turn left and follow Charlton road for about 0.6 miles. After you pass Parkview Close on your left, you should see the signs for Charlton. Go under the bridge straight after the signs, and then take the turning on the left signposted “Charlton Lakeside” and “Charlton Sports and Leisure Centre”. Follow the route from Charlton Village (Tesco) as above. If you get to the Tesco store you have gone too far.

By road

If heading from Andover, head along the Charlton Road past the Andover War Memorial Hospital until you reach Charlton Village. Go under the bridge at the entrance to the village and take the next left ? this is the entrance to the Charlton Sports and Leisure Centre, Charlton Lakeside. We would advise parking in the carpark on your right just after you turn left as the carpark further along this road is quite small. If using Satnav use SP10 4AJ for Tesco.
If coming from the A303, take the exit signposted Portway Industrial Estate. At the next two roundabouts follow the signs to the A343. At the next roundabout take the first left, following the signs to The Sports Academy. After about 200 meters take a right turn signposted The Sports Academy and Charlton Sports and Leisure Centre. Follow this road to find the overflow carpark on the left as the road bears round to the right, or the athletics track carpark a little further along. The best areas for parking are at the Salto carpark off Charlton Road and the athletics track carpark/overflow carpark reached via the Portway Industrial Estate. There is a small amount of parking available on Foxcotte Road and in the smaller carpark at Charlton Lakeside reached by following the road past the Salto Centre/carpark. SP10 3LF is the postcode for this area, but this postcode is shared by a number of businesses on the Industrial Estate, so the satnav may not take you all the way to the correct destination.

junior parkrun rules and guidelines

Andover junior parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. To make the event as safe as possible, participants, spectators and volunteers are asked to take note of the following rules and guidelines:

  • Whilst parkrun fully accepts its duty of care and will do everything it can to minimise risk of injury and harm to all participants whilst at parkrun events, it is parent/guardians who ultimately have responsibility for the welfare of their children.
  • It is not mandatory for a parent/guardian to participate in junior parkruns, but children under the age of 11 must be accompanied to/from the event by a responsible adult, and the responsible adult must remain in attendance for the duration of the event.
  • junior events are open and inclusive. Disabled people may participate wherever it is safe for them to do so. The event team can provide disabled participants with course information in order that the participant (or their parent/guardian) can make an informed decision about their safe participation.
  • Whilst more competitive children can use junior parkruns to test themselves against their own time, and against others, participation should ultimately be for fun, and we urge all parents/guardians/volunteers not to put children under undue pressure to perform.
  • junior parkruns are running, jogging and walking events, and the use of children’s scooters, balance bikes, trikes or cycles is prohibited.
  • Slower runners are encouraged to seed themselves, by starting towards the back of the group especially if an adult is accompanying them.
  • junior parkruns are timed events. Only those aged between 4 to 14 years old completing the course themselves will be given a result.
  • Exceptions to this rule are subject to the discretion of parkrun head office. Examples include those over 14 with special educational needs (SEN) or those with a registered disability, for whom social interaction and physical activity may be difficult but important.
  • A strict ‘no barcode no result’ policy will be enforced.
  • Buggies are allowed, subject to course conditions, but only if the adult pushing the buggy is accompanying a junior parkrunner. Adults with buggies are urged to position themselves appropriately for the safety and enjoyment of all.
  • With the exception of assistance dogs, dogs are not allowed to accompany walkers, joggers, runners or volunteers at junior parkrun events.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Spectators should keep clear of participants on the course and keep control of any children and dogs.
  • Participants should take care near roads and car parks, congregate away from the cars and be careful if driving to/from the event.
  • Photography or filming is likely to take place at junior parkrun events. Please see our photos page for more details.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.

Please consider helping the event by volunteering - this event survives only because of your generosity. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
