The course

Course description

The course starts and finishes by the old Pavilion near the Pavilion car park (free on Saturday) on Park Wood Road (what3words: ///tech.sway.classic). The course is considered challenging due to its hilly terrain. From the start / finish line, participants head towards the Crab & Winkle Way, up a grass slope, turning right onto the Crab & Winkle Way and past the nursery. Participants continue for approx. 800m until the turning point at the St. Cosmus and St. Damian Church then following the same route back towards the nursery.

Just before reaching the nursery, participants turn right into the small field and turn right again after 5 metres and do a lap of the entire field following the perimeter in an ANTICLOCKWISE direction.

On exiting the small field, participants turn left and follow the same out-and-back along the Crab & Winkle Way (turning at the church for a second and final time) and returning to the small field for a second lap, again following the perimeter of the field in an ANTICLOCKWISE direction.

Exiting the small field, participants turn right continuing past the nursery to turn right onto the nursery path. Participants then turn left onto the big field to start a full lap following the perimeter in an ANTICLOCKWISE direction exiting back onto the nursery path and turning right onto the Crab & Winkle Way for about 25 metres.

Participants then go back down the grass slope, heading towards the old Pavilion and the start / finish line.

Participants should always keep to the RIGHT to avoid collisions with other participants.

The course is suitable for buggies and pushchairs, but unfortunately, due to a university regulation prohibiting dog owners from walking their dogs on the grass pitches, the Canterbury parkrun is a dog-free event.

On occasions we may need to use our alternative course. The start / finish line is in the top big field 20m inside the gate. Participants make their way round the back of the car park and turn right onto the nursery path. Turn left onto the Crab & Winkle Way in front of the nursery. Continue on this path until reaching the turn around point at the church. Return to the nursery. Repeat twice more. After reaching the church for the third and final time, head back to the start / finish line by turning right at the nursery path and left into the top big field. On this course, participants should always keep LEFT to avoid collisions with other participants.

On the course

The course is 5k long. The course is at The Pavilion, University of Kent (Canterbury). The course is run on a mixture of tarmac paths, trail paths and grass. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

Toilets are available in the old Pavilion, accessible toilets are available in the Pavilion.

During university term time we grab a post-parkrun coffee in the Templeman Library. Entry is via the 'Grimond' entrance - what3words: ///horizons.takeovers.speeding. There is limited parking available in the nearby Gulbenkian car park. Please come and join us!

More details

Public transport

Bus: Bus: The Unibus routes (Uni1, Uni2) and the Triangle route between Canterbury and Whitstable all stop at the main University of Kent bus stop, located by Keynes College. These buses are all available to catch from Canterbury bus station. From Keynes College follow footpaths towards main campus and Giles Lane and then follow signage/road signs for Park Wood Road and/or Pavilion. Alternatively, the Uni2 route also serves bus stops closer to the old Pavilion.

For more detailed information, live bus updates and journey planners, see the Stagecoach website.

On foot

The University of Kent’s Canterbury campus can be reached by many ways on foot/bike, but the easiest way is to pick up the blue Crab & Winkle Way signage from Canterbury West train station.

Follow the route up Eliot footpath and on to campus. If you continue to follow the route you will walk/cycle past the Mandela building and end up outside The Venue nightclub. With The Venue on your left, the road ahead of you is University Road. From here follow the directions from Canterbury and Blean/Whitstable as outlined in the ‘by road’ section.

By road

You can access the university from two directions:

From Tyler Hill or St. Stephens, turn into the university (Giles Lane). Once on Giles Lane go straight over the first roundabout, past Woolf college and through a set of traffic lights and take the second exit (right on the roundabout) on to Park Wood Road.

From Canterbury (St. Dunstans) or Blean/Whitstable, turn into the university at University Road and follow the road all the way to the end. At the T-junction turn right on to Giles Lane, go through a set of traffic lights and take a left at the roundabout (first exit) on to Park Wood Road.

Once on Park Wood Road, the Pavilion is located approximately half a mile down the road on the right hand side.

There is limited free parking available in the Pavilion car park and/or alternatively at the end of Park Wood Road adjacent to the nursery school.

For more information on directions to the University of Kent, Canterbury campus please visit the website.

Course safety

Canterbury parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • Unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this event.
The only exception to this rule is when accompanied by an assistance dog.
  • parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.

We hope these tips help to ensure that Canterbury parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
