The course
Course description
A 3-lap course comprising 3 identical 1.67km-long laps largely following sealed pathways, a short grassed section and a section of boardwalk all within the Bay area, starting/finishing within the Soundshell area of Caroline Bay. The course is largely flat, with only a short incline on the Boardwalk section of each lap.
Unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this event.
On the course
The course is 5k long. The course is at Caroline Bay, Timaru. The course is run on a mixture of permanent paths and grass. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.
Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.
Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.
Facilities
Public toilets are available approximately 100m from the Soundshell start/finish area, as well as bicycle parking and an adjacent, recently modernized, extensive children’s playground (CPlay).
More details
Public transport
Bus: If you are staying/living locally in Timaru, the MyWay bus service is available MyWay by Metro | Metro Timaru, which can be called (like a taxi service). They have a designated bus stop next to the Caroline Bay Skatepark for drop-off-pick-ups. [Note: this service only operates from 8am on a Saturday, meaning this will not be available to drop you off for the summer hours parkrun start (8am), however, it will be able to pick you up afterwards, and will suit the winter parkrun hours (9am start).
On foot
From the Caroline Bay carpark area (skatepark/children’s playground), which is the also the MyWay bus stop, the start/finish area for parkrun is at the large Soundshell amphitheatre, just off the Caroline Bay Hall buildings. Walk towards the Bay Hall buildings, continuing in the direction of the Bay Hill/Piazza steps and it should come into view.
Walking from the town centre, there are foot entrances at the top, middle and bottom of The Bay Hill (overlooking Caroline Bay) into the Caroline Bay area itself. The entrance mid-way up Bay Hill is recommended, as it will bring you right into the Soundshell amphitheatre itself, whilst both the bottom and top entrances off Bay Hill will take you ~200m either side of the Soundshell.
By road
Coming from both north and south of Timaru, it is recommended to stay on SH1 through Timaru, following signs for Caroline Bay. A traffic-light guided turn onto Te Weka Street (Coupland’s Bakery is a landmark to look for on the corner of SH1 and Te Weka St), then shortly right onto Virtue Avenue, will bring you into the Caroline Bay area. Follow the road until you reach the carpark around the skate-park and next to the children’s playground area.
If you wish to park on Marine Parade or east end of the Caroline Bay, you can follow signs for “Port”/ “Caroline Bay” (over the Loop Rd Bridge at the end of Sefton Street). Once at the bottom of the Loop Road, turn left onto Marine Parade and follow the road until you see the carpark, otherwise parking is available on Marine Parade itself.

Course safety
Caroline Bay parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:
- Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
- Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
- Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
- We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
- Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
- Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
- Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
- If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
- If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
- Unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this event.
The only exception to this rule is when accompanied by an assistance dog. - parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.
We hope these tips help to ensure that Caroline Bay parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
