The course

Course description

The course runs out and back along a permanent path, starting 150 metres from the front (lake side) of Dinton Activity Centre. Note that the course is bordered by open water, without a barrier between the path and water.
From the start the route heads south on the permanent path which is between Black Swan Lake and Emm Brook. It passes Dinton Pastures Adventure Play Area, and continues around the lake, passing the southernmost tip and starting northwest. At the 1km point, it takes a U-turn and continues back along the path to the start/finish point.

On the course

The course is at Dinton Pastures Country Park, Wokingham. The course is 2000m (2K) long. This has been accurately measured by us with a professional measuring wheel. The course is run entirely on permanent paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Marshals will be located along the course.

The course will be marshalled so that juniors will be in sight of a marshal at all times.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. Please give way to other park users. This won't slow you down and will help ensure the overall success of the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

Public toilets and changing facilities are available at Dinton Activity Centre. The accessible toilets and changing facilities at the Activity Centre are available 24/7 by radar key. Public toilets are also available by the main car park, either inside the café or next to the Emmbrook room.

Dinton Pastures Country Park has many facilities that make it perfect for a family day out. The Activity Centre, near the junior parkrun start/finish has a wide range of activities for families to enjoy. You can hire pedalos, paddleboards, canoes and kayaks for fun on the lake. If you're proficient enough, you can hire sailing dinghies. There is also a climbing wall and you can even do some archery! There are many walks or trails around the lakes to enjoy on foot, or on your bike. Children love the huge playground and many enjoy feeding the ducks, geese and swans on the lake too. Dinton Adventure Golf is an 18 hole crazy golf course. There's even one of just a few disc golf courses in the country. Mobility scooters are available if needed.

More details

Public transport

Bus: Whilst the 128 bus stops close to the main entrance to Dinton Pastures Country Park and The Jolly Farmer, the timetable does not work for getting to Dinton Pastures junior parkrun.

Train: The nearest train station is Winnersh, which is approximately 25 minutes/1.2 miles walk away from the start/finish. It is also possible to walk from Winnersh Triangle station, but it probably takes a further 10 minutes. See Directions on Foot for how to access the start/finish from Winnersh station.

On foot

From Winnersh:
Take Robin Hood Lane towards Twyford. Once over the motorway bridge you have two options:
1. Turn left into the main entrance to Dinton Pastures Country Park, walk past the overflow car park, turn right before the Coffee House and follow the path round until it meets the main path from the car park, by the Coffee Pod (Airstream). Turn right, past the playground (which should be on your left) towards the main lake (Black Swan). When you get to Black Swan Lake, turn right and walk up to the Activity Centre.
2. Walk past the main entrance to Dinton Pastures Country Park, keeping on Davis Street. Take the first left into a small lane. The lane is opposite where the pavement ends on Davis Street. There is a footpath sign. Walk down the short lane and onto the footpath at the end. Follow this footpath to Dinton Activity Centre. Please note that this route is more direct, but is not double buggy friendly and is tight for singles.

From Woodley:
Please note that the most direct route from parts of Woodley is via Sandford Lane, but we do not advise walking it due to the lack of pavement and the speed at which cars drive along the narrow lane.
Access the path that runs alongside the Loddon, between Colemansmoor Road and the Museum of Berkshire Aviation. Cross across the Loddon roughly halfway along this path, entering Dinton near Tufty's Corner. Once across the bridge, turn left onto the path beside White Swan Lake and follow it until you reach a T-junction at Sandford Lake. Turn right, then head up the slope to the path by Black Swan Lake. Turn left at Black Swan Lake and keep following the path around the lake until you reach Dinton Activity Centre.

From Twyford/Hurst:
Note that this route can be quite muddy when it has been raining and can occasionally flood.
Walk south along Lodge Road until you pass the entrance to Lea Farm (Chocoholics) on your right. In front of you, the road makes a sharp left turn; at this spot there is a path on the right (beware the tree roots!) leading to Dinton Pastures. Follow this path along some zigzags until you reach Sandford Lane. To your right is the overflow car park, and diagonally across the road is the entrance to the Activity Centre main car park.

By road

Dinton Pastures Country Park is easily accessible from the A329(M), M4 and A4. There are brown signs directing visitors towards it from both Winnersh and Twyford. To access the closest car park to the parkrun start, we recommend following the signs for Dinton Activity Centre (postcode RG10 0SU).

From Reading/Wokingham, take the Reading Road to the Winnersh Crossroads. Turn onto the B3030, Robin Hood Lane, towards Twyford. Once across the motorway bridge, ignore the sign into Dinton Pastures Country Park and keep straight on Davis Street, following the sign to Dinton Activity Centre. Turn left after the Jolly Farmer pub, into Sandford Lane. The entrance to the Activity Centre Car Park is on the left.

From Twyford, head south on Church Road, which soon turns into Waltham Road, towards Wokingham. Turn immediately right after the railway bridge, onto Hurst Road, the A321. Just before you enter Whistley Green turn right onto Lodge Road, towards Winnersh. Lodge Road has an almost 90° right bend (turning into Davis Street), not far after which is the right turn for Sandford Lane, signposted Dinton Activity Centre. The entrance to the Activity Centre car park is on the left off Sandford Lane.

Please note that after heavy rain, Sandford Lane often shuts. You can often still access Dinton Activity Centre from the Hurst end. Dinton Pastures junior parkrun does not take any responsibility for any decisions you make when the road is flooded. The safest option in such circumstances is to park in the main Dinton Pastures Country Park car park and walk to the start/finish from there.

There are six car parks at Dinton Pastures Country Park. The closest one to the start of Dinton Pastures junior parkrun is the Activity Centre car park, which is off Sandford Lane and well signposted. Use postcode RG10 0SU with Sat Nav. Please note that this is a different car park from the one recommended for Dinton Pastures 5k parkrun. The parking fee charged by Dinton Pastures Country Park helps to contribute towards the maintenance of the country park.
Current charges are listed on the Wokingham Countryside website.

The car parking attendants are known to give out fines if parking fees have not been paid correctly.
You can pay and display at a machine, or check-in on arrival and check-out on departure. If you prefer, you can also pay on your phone using RingGo

junior parkrun rules and guidelines

Dinton Pastures junior parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. To make the event as safe as possible, participants, spectators and volunteers are asked to take note of the following rules and guidelines:

  • Whilst parkrun fully accepts its duty of care and will do everything it can to minimise risk of injury and harm to all participants whilst at parkrun events, it is parent/guardians who ultimately have responsibility for the welfare of their children.
  • It is not mandatory for a parent/guardian to participate in junior parkruns, but children under the age of 11 must be accompanied to/from the event by a responsible adult, and the responsible adult must remain in attendance for the duration of the event.
  • junior events are open and inclusive. Disabled people may participate wherever it is safe for them to do so. The event team can provide disabled participants with course information in order that the participant (or their parent/guardian) can make an informed decision about their safe participation.
  • Whilst more competitive children can use junior parkruns to test themselves against their own time, and against others, participation should ultimately be for fun, and we urge all parents/guardians/volunteers not to put children under undue pressure to perform.
  • junior parkruns are running, jogging and walking events, and the use of children’s scooters, balance bikes, trikes or cycles is prohibited.
  • Slower runners are encouraged to seed themselves, by starting towards the back of the group especially if an adult is accompanying them.
  • junior parkruns are timed events. Only those aged between 4 to 14 years old completing the course themselves will be given a result.
  • Exceptions to this rule are subject to the discretion of parkrun head office. Examples include those over 14 with special educational needs (SEN) or those with a registered disability, for whom social interaction and physical activity may be difficult but important.
  • A strict ‘no barcode no result’ policy will be enforced.
  • Buggies are allowed, subject to course conditions, but only if the adult pushing the buggy is accompanying a junior parkrunner. Adults with buggies are urged to position themselves appropriately for the safety and enjoyment of all.
  • With the exception of assistance dogs, dogs are not allowed to accompany walkers, joggers, runners or volunteers at junior parkrun events.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Spectators should keep clear of participants on the course and keep control of any children and dogs.
  • Participants should take care near roads and car parks, congregate away from the cars and be careful if driving to/from the event.
  • Photography or filming is likely to take place at junior parkrun events. Please see our photos page for more details.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.

Please consider helping the event by volunteering - this event survives only because of your generosity. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
