The course

Course description

An undulating 2 lap course on well-established paths and tracks around Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park. Starting close to the Visitor Centre, the route heads along the old railway before heading through the woods back to the Visitor Centre and the start of the second lap. On completion of the second lap the finish is clearly visible in front of the Visitor Centre.

A steep hill up a gravel path and some low steps descending to the visitor centre make this a challenging course for buggies.

Trail shoes recommended, especially in wet weather.

On the course

The course is 5k long. The course is in Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park, Normanby, Middlesbrough . The course is run entirely on trail paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

Toilets located in Visitor Centre Children’s play area Coats and bags can be left in the visitor centre at owner’s risk

Public transport

Bus: Arriva 65 service from Middlesbrough stops at the turning circle for Flatts Lane NHS offices. Look across the road and you will see the signs for Flatts Lane Country Park entrance (2 minute walk). We would suggest checking on Google for 'Middlesbrough to Flatts Lane' for the latest times and bus numbers as they frequently change.

Train: Nearest station is Nunthorpe (approx. 2miles). Follow the instructions below to walk from the station. It will take around 40 minutes.

On foot

From Nunthorpe station: Turn left out of the station and walk through the village and past Nunthorpe school to the roundabout. Turn left at the roundabout and walk to the top of the hill (Ormesby Bank). Cross the road and take the Bridleway east. Follow signs along the bridleway for the visitor centre.

From the top of Ormesby Bank: Take footpath east signposted Public Bridleway. Follow signs to the visitor centre.

From Normanby centre: At the crossroads take Flatts Lane south. Walk up the hill through the village, past Normanby Primary school and the Norman Conquest pub. Walk over the bridge over the A174 from here you can see the signs for the Country Park ahead on the right

By road

If using SATNAV the postcode is: TS6 0NN

From the A66 eastbound, turn right at the Southbank Asda roundabout onto Normanby Road. Go straight on at the crossroads and straight over the next three sets of traffic lights. Continue past Normanby Primary School and over the A174. After this bridge, the Country Park is approximately ¼ mile on your right.

From the A19 northbound, take the A172 exit and follow the signs for Stokesley. Pass Stokesley, on the A172 and continue to a roundabout with the A1043, signposted to Guisborough. Follow this towards Guisborough through two roundabouts until you reach the third roundabout, then take the A171 - still towards Guisborough - and Flatts Lane is ½ mile on the left (look for the brown sign). Course safety

Flatts Lane parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.

We hope these tips help to ensure that Flatts Lane parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
