The course
Course description
The Lower Hutt parkrun is an out and back course along the stop bank on the eastern side of the Hutt River. Starting just south of the southern end of the riverside carpark, runners travel along the sealed path under the Ewen bridge and up onto the stopbank. Runners follow the stopbank south, under the Ava Rail bridge and down to a grass covered turnaround area just north of the Seaview bridge. A quick clockwise loop of the grass area and then runners head back north to finish just south of where they started 5km earlier. On a calm day this will be a fast and scenic course. On a windy day runners should expect to battle a headwind during either the first or second half of the run but will also have the luxury of a strong tailwind during the remainder of their run. Other than 100 meters at the half way turn-around, this course is completely sealed meaning you can leave your trail shoes at home. The course is closed to traffic but runners should be aware that other pedestrians and cyclists use the stopbanks as well.
On the course
The course is 5k long. The course is in Lower Hutt, Wellington and run predominantly on sealed stopbank path, with approximately 100 metres on grass at the turnaround point. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.
Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.
Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.
Facilities
Please note that there are no toilets at the start/finish area or on the course itself. The nearest toilets are a 600 meter jog from the start area, next to the Horticultural Centre in Laings Road (opposite the Lower Hutt information centre).
More details
Public transport
If travelling by bike, ride along the stop bank on the eastern side of the Hutt River until you find the south end of the riverside carpark, 100 meters north of the Ewen Bridge.
On foot
If travelling from Wellington or Upper Hutt by train, take the train to arrive at the Waterloo Interchange, no later than 7:15am. Then catch the number 160 Wainuomata to Lower Hutt bus from bus stop D to the Queensgate bus stop C in Bunny Street. From there, walk west along Bunny Street (south side of the Westfield shopping centre) and along Margaret Street to High Street. Turn left and walk down High Street to Andrews Avenue and then right into Andrews Avenue. At the end of Andrews Avenue walk up on to the stop bank and south 200 meters to the start/finish area. Note: The Melling train line from Wellington does not run on a Saturday.
By road
From Wellington or Upper Hutt, travel along State Highway 2 until you reach Melling. Drive over the Melling bridge and turn right at the round-about. Travel south along Rutherford Street through the first round-a-bout and turn right into Daly Street just after King Toyota. Follow Daly Street south until the next round-a-bout and then turn right up the short hill over the stop bank and into the riverside carpark. Park at the south end of the carpark. Note: Do not attempt to enter the riverside carpark at the first round-a-bout in Rutherford Street as this will take you to the riverside farmers market. On busy morning you may also find a small traffic jam at this round-a-bout due to the high volume of cars entering the farmers market carpark at the northern end of the riverside carpark. Delays are not normally longer than a minute or two and not normally until later in the morning. Please also see the Facilities panel on the left of this page for a note on parking and which entrance to use

Course safety
Lower Hutt parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:
- Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
- Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
- Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
- We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
- Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
- Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
- Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
- If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
- If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
- It is not permitted to run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.
- You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
- parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.
We hope these tips help to ensure that Lower Hutt parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
