The course
Course description
The course consists of two laps: participants complete a partial circuit of Malling Recreation Ground before heading up the old railway cutting for an out-and-back section. Upon their return to the start, this loop is repeated.
Due to the nature of the terrain, parts of the course may become waterlogged or very muddy in wet weather, making it harder for people with buggies/pushchairs - please contact the team in advance for further information.
On the course
The course is 5k long. The course is at Malling Recreation Ground, Lewes. The course is run on a combination of grass, permanent paths and trail paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.
Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.
Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.
Facilities
Café, toilets, children’s play park, limited free parking.
More details
Public transport
Lewes train station (approx. one-mile walk to the start) has regular services from Eastbourne, Seaford, Newhaven, Brighton and London.
The Regency 28 and 29 buses run regularly into Lewes from Brighton and Hailsham (No. 28) and Brighton, Uckfield, Crowborough, Royal Tunbridge Wells and Heathfield (No. 29). Within Lewes, the 127 bus runs half-hourly between the Landport and Malling estates.
The nearest bus stops for Malling Rec are at Sussex Police HQ (No. 28), Sackville House behind Tesco (28, 127) and Phoenix Causeway (28 and 29). Bus 121 runs infrequently from Newick, via North and South Chailey and the Nevill, to the bottom of School Hill (approx. half-mile walk to the start).
On foot
Malling Rec is accessible from any direction within Lewes.
From the west side of town, take the path past the Pells Lake and cross the river via Willey’s Bridge.
From the centre of town, cross the river via the bridge on Cliffe High Street, then turn left into North Court (signposted “Sussex Ouse Valley Way”) and continue past Harvey’s Brewery and Tesco towards the Rec.
From the train station, turn right onto Station Road, then right at the junction onto Lansdown Place/Friars Walk and at the traffic lights turn right again onto Cliffe High Street and follow the directions above.
From the North, pick up the footpath from the junction of Old Malling Way and Church Lane.
From the East, access the Rec via Spences Lane or South Downs Road.
By road
Lewes is accessible via the A275 (from the North-West), A26 (from the North-East) or A27 (from East or West, turning north onto the A26 at the Southerham Roundabout).
There are larger Pay & Display car parks (approx. half-mile to the start) both on the east (Malling) side of the river at the Phoenix Causeway BN7 2JW and across Willey’s Bridge on the west (Pells) side of the river at Spring Gardens BN7 2PT and Brook Street BN7 2PE. Tesco Superstore BN7 2BY (approx. quarter-mile to the start) also offers up to 3 hours’ free parking for customers. Whilst there is very limited free parking at the Malling Community Centre BN7 2HQ, accessible from the A26 via Orchard Road, then Spences Lane, we recommend parkrunners avoid this.

Course safety
Malling Rec parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:
- Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
- Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
- Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
- We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
- Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
- Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
- Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
- If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
- If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
- Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
- You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
We hope these tips help to ensure that Malling Rec parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
