The course

Course description

The course is two laps, clockwise, starting alongside the children’s playpark and finishing in front of the Adventure Centre. The course includes the King George V Park in Melksham, Wiltshire, taking in the Riverside Walk and the Forest Community Centre field. It is run on hard trail paths, compacted gravel and grass, uneven in places. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain and trail shoes may be preferable in winter months. There is a narrow section so please be aware of participants in two directions and sometimes three.

The course is unsuitable for buggies and pushchairs - please contact the team in advance for further information.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed at this event.

On the course

The course is 5k long. The course is at King George V Park, Melksham. The course is run on a mixture of tarmac paths, trail paths and grass. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

There are toilet facilities at the rear of the Adventure Centre, right by the start / finish area.

Please check with the service provider before travelling.

By Train:

Trains to Melksham are available from the directions of Westbury & Trowbridge and from Swindon & Chippenham. It is a 12-to-14-minute walk from Melksham station to the park.

Please check with the service provider before travelling.

On foot

There are 5 entrances to the park and the start is alongside the children’s playpark.

By road

From Trowbridge or Westbury
Follow the A350 towards Chippenham and follow the first Melksham town centre sign. You will see the first car park on your right just before the Market Place and others signposted to the left and right as you head towards the north end of the town.

From Chippenham or Bath
Head to Melksham along the A350 and when you reach the Farmers Roundabout, just past ASDA on your right, take the first exit towards the town centre. Carry on over the river bridge to a car park on your left at the mini-roundabout but these are time-limited. If you carry straight on at the mini-roundabout and follow the road to the traffic lights the main town car park is on your right but there is no right turn so you need to go straight ahead and around Market Place then make a left turn back at the lights.

Parking
There are pay-and-display car parks on Lowbourne next to the old Library, the main car park in the centre of town and another on the south side of town off King Street.

As from 1st Dec 2023, we no longer have use of the Cooper Tires Employees’ car park so please use the town car parks as described above.

Also, please do not use the car park at the top end of the park near River Mead school as the canoe club will be using that to keep vehicles out of the way for us down at the Adventure Centre. Some of their members will no doubt be joining us from time to time. It is also used by members of the public.

Coffee

Every week we grab a post-parkrun coffee: the Adventure Centre near the finish line in King George V park. There you can have a cup of coffee, tea, squash, and a slice of cake for £1. Please note the cafe is run by the Adventure Centre and can only accept cash. Please come and join us!

Course safety

Melksham parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • Unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this event.
The only exception to this rule is when accompanied by an assistance dog.

We hope these tips help to ensure that Melksham parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
