The course
Course description
A scenic two and three quarter lap course, all on permanent paths. We start with the hill up through the middle of the park, turning left at the top. Continue on the flat path and take a sharp right turn at the end. On lap 1, continue up towards the park gate on Harehills Lane and take the final right turn towards Potternewton Mansion/Gurdwara Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. On reaching the end, turn left on to the main path past the building and continue to follow the path round, taking the lovely long downhill, ready for the uphill that takes you past the finish line. Continue past the finish line, take a right turn at the top and enjoy your second downhill. Turn right at the bottom of the hill and continue on the flat section which takes you back to the start. Go up the same hill, turn left at the top and right at the end again. On laps 2 & 3 you then take the first tarmac path on your right, which is flat and takes you past the building again. Then it’s the same route as the rest of lap 1.
On the course
The course is 5k long. The course is at Potternewton Park, Leeds. The course is run entirely on tarmac paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.
Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.
Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.
Facilities
The Reginald Centre on Chapeltown Road is a very short walk from the finish and provides toilets. It is open before parkrun and if the main doors are locked you can access through the rear doors via Reginald Terrace. If the doors are locked, please knock and the security guard will let you in.
The centre also has computers where new participants can register in advance, and print their barcode.
More details
Public transport
Bus: If travelling from Leeds City Centre, the number 2, 3 and 3A buses run from Vicar Lane, and stop close to the Reginald Centre on Chapeltown Road. From there it is a very short walk down Harehills Avenue to Potternewton Park, which is on the left hand side of the road.
On foot
From the Reginald Centre, cross over Chapeltown Road and head down Harehills Avenue. The park is about a hundred metres along on the left hand side. There are also pedestrian entrances to the park on Avenue Hill and Harehills Lane. The start is closest to Harehills Avenue, at the lowest part of the park where the ground slopes down from both sides.
By road
If travelling from the north or south, follow the M1 until it joins the M621.
If coming from the east or west on the M62, look for signs to merge onto the M621.
Follow the M621, then at junction 2 take the A643 exit. At Elland Rd Interchange take the 2nd exit onto A643. At Armley Gyratory follow the signs for the A58 (M). Exit left following signs for A61 and A58, then through Sheepscar Interchange follow signs for Chapeltown. Drive up Chapeltown Road, passing through pedestrian lights, then at the lights for the crossroads with Reginald Terrace and Harehills Avenue, turn left into Reginald Terrace.
There is a very small car park behind the Reginald Centre and some limited on-street parking on Reginald Terrace which runs adjacent to the Reginald Centre. The satnav postcode for the Reginald Centre is LS7 3EX. There is also on-street parking on Harehills Lane adjacent to the northern side of Potternewton Park. We would politely ask people not to park along Harehills Avenue and Avenue Hill, as these roads tend to get very busy and congested and extra parked cars can be a nuisance for local residents.
Coffee
Every week we grab a post-parkrun coffee: Aromatik, 197 Chapeltown Road, LS7 3DX. Please come and join us!

Course safety
Potternewton parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:
- Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
- Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
- Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
- We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
- Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
- Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
- Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
- If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
- If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
- It is not permitted to run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.
- Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
- You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
- parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.
We hope these tips help to ensure that Potternewton parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
