The course

Course description

The course is a 3 lap, anti-clockwise loop (1,600m per lap) consisting of sections of tarmac and gravel paths. At the end of the final lap the route peels to the left soon after the start location, heading back towards the Pavilion finishing point. The route takes in both Avenham and Miller Parks, running alongside the River Ribble. Anyone running will be able to enjoy the great views provided by both.

On the course

The course is 5k long. It's run in Avenham and Miller Parks on tarmac and gravel paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

More details

Public transport

The city centre location conveniently puts the park less than 5 minutes walk from the railway station and only 10 minutes from the bus station.

On foot

Avenham and Miller Parks are located in the heart of the city centre on the banks for the River Ribble, less than 5 minutes from Fishergate. If you head past Winkley Square you can enter at the Ribblesdale Place entrance. There are further access points to the West of the Park, from South Meadow Lane, near the Continental Pub, and in the East of the Park, from Esplanade, at the back of Christ the King School. The Ribble Way national trail also passes along the river through both Parks.

Bike - Cyclists are well catered for as national cycle route 6 and route 55 pass right through the Park. Cycle parking is available outside the Pavilion Cafe.

By road

Please allow sufficient time for your journey as the park is located close to the city centre and therefore access via road is restricted.

Car parking is possible on South Meadow Lane, opposite the Continental Pub, use postcode PR1 8JP. A second car park is available off East Cliff, use post code PR1 3JH and a third car park is available at the end of the Esplanade, behind Christ the King High School, the postcode for the school is PR1 4LX. As these car parks are located in residential areas, if you are unable to find a space in one of them and park on the nearby streets, please make sure you consider access for residents and park responsibly. All of these car parks are a 10-15min walk to the run start point.

Most of the roads in and around the city centre, particularly around Winkley Square, are either permit holders only or pay and display with a maximum stay of 1 hour. The postcode to get to this area is PR1 3JJ. The park can then be accessed from the Ribblesdale Place entrance.

Parking is also available in the city centre, the most convenient of which would be the Fishergate Centre, which can be found on your Sat Nav with PR1 8HJ. You need to park at the point furthest away from the shops, which means going under the small bridge into the additional parking area. At the back of the car park is a set of steps, climb these to the top and turn left onto East Cliff. This road will bring you out to the Ribblesdale Place entrance on your right.

Course safety

Preston parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • It is not permitted to run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
  • parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.

We hope these tips help to ensure that Preston parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
