The course
Course description
Two out-and-back laps on a mixture of grass, trail and tarmac/cinder tracks. Start (green marker) is on the playing fields, go around the rugby pitch and into a short wooded stretch, turning left onto the Strawberry Line path (at the blue marker), then up to the northern turning point around the log benches and then down to the southern turning point by the access ramp (purple markers). Return to go around the north edge of the playing fields, back into the woods and repeat for lap 2.
At the end of lap 2 cut across the playing fields (from the orange marker) to the finish (red marker).
There are some narrow sections on the course where those taking part with buggies, children under 11, and dogs, should take extra care. In winter, please note that some sections of the course may become soft underfoot.
When the playing fields are waterlogged we may be able to use an alternative route taking in more of the Strawberry Line and less of the playing fields to avoid cancellation.
On the course
The course is 5k long. The course is at Sharpham Road Playing Fields, Cheddar. The course is run on a mixture of tarmac paths, trail paths and grass. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.
Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.
Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.
Facilities
Toilet facilities are available in the Community Pavilion bar area once it opens up at around 8.45am, with hot and cold food and beverages available from 9. The playing fields have a skate park and BMX pump track, and are adjacent to the reservoir, which is popular for walking, birdwatching, and water sports. There are no shower facilities but please enquire at Kings Fitness and Leisure in Station Road about availability there (these will be chargeable). During parkrun, coats etc. are best left by our storage bins or round by the finish funnel, not in the pavilion. Please remember to pick them up afterwards.
More details
Public transport
The 126 bus runs between Weston-Super-Mare and Wells, with the earliest service in each direction arriving before 8am. The closest stop for parkrun is Round Oak Road, Cheddar (then a 10 minute walk to playing fields).
On foot
- From the centre of Cheddar follow Station Road (towards Wedmore) out of the village centre, and after 200m turn right by Cheddar Tyre Centre. Follow the Strawberry Line path which starts by Travis Perkins (signposted as route 26 towards Axbridge). After 500m, pass under the bridge, go up the steps or ramp on your left and continue past Dunsley Field. 200m further along Sharpham Road the playing fields will be on your right.
- From the lower gorge area, head west along Tweentown, into The Barrows, left into Barrows Road, down to the end and then cross the A371 and go over the old railway, turning right into Sharpham Road then as above.
- From the north of Cheddar use Round Oak Road and either Holwell Lane or the paths through the Littlewood Way estate to get to the playing fields.
- Coming from Axbridge, go around the north-eastern side of the reservoir, and look for the steps down to the playing fields on your left, a further 400m past the yacht club.
By road
Car parking at the playing fields is free and is shared with the tennis club all year round. From September to April parking is much more limited during school term times, as the playing fields are then also shared with junior football teams. If you can car-share, walk or cycle, this will be a great help.
Please try to arrive before 8.30 and use the signed spaces in the side bays for parkrun. The spaces outside the tennis club and those closest to the pavilion need to be saved for other users of the sports facilities. At busy times, please move your car after parkrun to free up space for visiting teams. Please don’t park in Sharpham Road itself as it’s narrow and can get congested, but there may be free space in the adjacent reservoir car park, or the reservoir car park on the Axbridge side (10-15 minutes walk as above). There is no parking or vehicle access to the playing fields via Holwell Lane (a gravel track).
If you are visiting Cheddar Gorge, caves or village after doing parkrun, you might prefer to arrive early, park in the Cliff Street (BS27 3PS) or Church Street (BS27 3NZ) car parks (both pay and display) and come over on foot as above - allow 15 minutes to jog across to the playing fields.
Please do not park on the nearby residential streets or housing estates as it obstructs residents’ access. Thank you.
Coffee
Every week we grab a post-parkrun coffee: we will usually be in the cafe/bar area in the Community Pavilion. Please come and join us!

Course safety
Sharpham Road Playing Fields parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:
- Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
- Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
- Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
- We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
- Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
- Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
- Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
- If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
- If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
- It is not permitted to run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.
- Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
- You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
- parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.
We hope these tips help to ensure that Sharpham Road Playing Fields parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
