The course

Course description

Nearly four laps around the Old Showfield on smooth paths. Some gentle climbs; and some good downhills, set within a natural, green landscape - with views stretching across the town.

Please note unfortunately the paths are not wide enough to accommodate double buggies.

Unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this event.

On the course

The course is 5k long. The course is at The Old Showfield, Frome. The course is run entirely on tarmac paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

The Old Showfield is one of Frome’s largest green spaces with a children's play area, zip wire & an outdoor gym.

NO toilet facilities available at the park.

More details

Bus: D2 - From Bath (via Hinton Charterhouse, Norton St Philip and Beckington). NB. The D2 stops on Berkley Road (opposite Windsor Crescent) This is the closest bus stop to the Showfield; less than half a mile from the course.

The X34 - From Chippenham (via Melksham and Trowbridge).

Train: Frome train station is just under a mile from the Old Showfield on foot or by bike. The walk or cycle from the train station is a gentle but steady climb; with a scenic route following part of National Cycle Route 24.

  • Turn right at the bottom of Station Approach
  • Cross Portway; and continue right on the A362
  • You’ll pass underneath a railway bridge
  • From here, you can either stay on the pavement; turning left to follow New Road and then Rodden Road
  • Or you can turn left towards Rodden Meadow, following the NCR 24 signs
  • You’ll go over a footbridge
  • Turn immediately back on yourself as you come off the bridge; then follow the riverside path ahead
  • This path runs parallel to Rodden Road; and you’ll need to take the first or second footpath on your right to join up with Rodden Road
On foot

The town centre is about half a mile from the course. The most direct route to the Old Showfield is up North Parade - a (fairly!) steep hill. Alternatively, you can cut along Spring Lane if you’re in the Welshmill part of Frome. There are numerous Public Rights of Way nearby; and there’s easy access from the nearby residential areas.

If you’re cycling, there are two cycle shelters next to the Frome Medical Practice and there are places around the Old Showfield where you can lock your bike up.

By road

Around Frome: Locally, there are plenty of routes to and from the Old Showfield, with access from Bath Road; Rodden Road; the Stonebridge area; and Berkley Road.

From Bath & Bristol: Pick up the A36, heading towards Salisbury & Warminster. Take the third exit onto the A361 - following the signs for Frome - when you reach the Beckington roundabout, you’ll stay on this road all the way in to Frome:

  • Going straight across a smaller roundabout
  • Where the road becomes the B3090
  • Stay on the B3090 all the way in to Frome; passing Frome College on your left
  • Go straight on at the traffic lights
  • The road bends round to the left; and you’ll see signs for Frome Medical Practice
  • You’ll see the cricket pitch on your left
  • The course is here
  • If you get to the crossroads with the Vine Tree pub on your left, then you’ve gone too far

From Salisbury & Warminster: Pick up the A36 heading towards Bath & Bristol. You can continue on the A36 until you reach the Beckington roundabout. Take the first exit; then follow the instructions as if you’re coming from Bath & Bristol.

Alternatively, you can come off the A36 a bit earlier:

  • Follow the signs for Longleat when you get to Cley Hill roundabout
  • You’ll see Cley Hill on your right; and you’ll reach a small roundabout
  • Turn right to continue on the A362, following the signs to Frome
  • Drive through Corsley Heath
  • Take the right turn, signed Frome (there’s a filter lane for the turn)
  • Follow the road ahead
  • You’ll pass Asda on your left; and go straight on at the roundabout
  • You’ll reach a set of traffic lights. Get into the right-hand lane to turn right onto New Road
  • Follow the sharp bend round to the left
  • You’ll reach another set of traffic lights; just before a railway bridge
  • Go under the bridge; then continue straight on Rodden Road
  • You’ll reach a crossroads with traffic lights; and you’ll see the Vine Tree pub in front of you
  • Go straight over the crossroads
  • The course is on your right

Free parking: Next to the cricket club Off Rodden Road: BA11 2AH or at Frome Town FC Off Berkley Road: BA11 2EH

Course safety

The Old Showfield parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • Unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this event.
The only exception to this rule is when accompanied by an assistance dog.
  • parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.

We hope these tips help to ensure that The Old Showfield parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
