The course
Course description
The whole course is off road on grass pasture and has outstanding views of the Castle and surrounding countryside. It follows a field fence and returns alongside the River Aln. Being entirely on grass the course can be run in either trail shoes or road shoes although after inclement weather trail shoes would be preferable. Due to the terrain, the course is only suitable for off-road buggies/wheelchairs.
Alternative Course
The alternative course, which will be used when cattle are grazing and is situated in the field next to the regular course. It can be accessed through the same gate. It is also a three lap course run on a grass field. The course is undulating and has an overall elevation gain of 16 metres on each lap.
On the course
The course is 5k long. The course is at The Pastures, Alnwick. The course is run entirely on grass. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.
Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.
Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.
Facilities
There are no toilet facilities at the start. Public toilets are available in Alnwick town approximately half a mile from the start. The main Alnwick public toilets are located at Northumberland Hall, close to the Market Place in Alnwick town centre.
More details
Public transport
Bus: There is a bus station in the centre of Alnwick, with buses connecting Alnwick to the surrounding towns as well as the city of Newcastle (the X15 and X18 buses both run from Haymarket bus station). It is approximately a ten minute walk to the start from the bus station.
Train: The nearest train station is Alnmouth 6 miles away.
On foot
From the town centre simply head to the Castle and continue 200 metres down the hill, known as the Peth, to the start.
By road
The post code to the Castle is NE66 1NG.
Alnwick is easily accessible from north or south and is less than a mile off the A1.
There is limited parking on the hill below the Castle and a small car park beyond the Lion Bridge. It is essential that the bridge is not used for parking. Car parking is free in Alnwick town which is only a few minutes walk/jog away although a timing disc is required and timing restrictions do apply.
Course safety
The Pastures parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:
- Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
- Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
- Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
- We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
- Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
- Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
- Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
- If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
- If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
- Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
- You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
- Runners pushing buggies are also welcome, however the course is only suitable for off-road buggies. Please take extreme care of other runners around you. If possible start from the back of the field and try to keep to one side of the main body of runners.
We hope these tips help to ensure that The Pastures parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
