The course

Course description

The course begins between the two tall trees towards the entrance of the car park and runs along the perimeter of the football playing fields for 3 and a bit laps in in an anti-clockwise direction keeping behind the football goalposts. Once you get towards the end of the loop you will cut across the corner of the car park by the entrance of the reception area then will run behind the sports centre heading towards the start area to commence the next loop.

The course is mainly flat and grassy with about 20 metres of concrete of the corner of the car park to cross towards the end of the loop. The finish is located 400 metres past the start line.

On the course

The course is 5k long. The course is in Peter May Sports Ground, Walthamstow. The course is run on a mixture of concrete and grass. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

  • Parking: There is free car parking available for about 200 cars but it is heavily used by football groups and the entrance and exit can be very congested as it is a single lane road in and out.
  • Bicycles: There are bike stands which can accomodate about 20 bikes. Please do not chain bikes to the white rails which are for entrance to the sports' centre itself.
  • Changing Facilities: Changing facilities are available at the sports centre.
  • Cafe: We do not have a seated cafe on site. There is usually a vendor who sells drinks and small snacks from a counter.
A full cafe is less than two minutes walk left from the exit gates, where some participants gather for post run breakfasts.
We often have cakes and treats on our finish line table which participants are welcome to contribute to or share.

More details

Public transport

Bus: W16

Overground: The nearest station is Higham's Park (on the London to Chingford line), 0.8m away.

Nearest tube: Walthamstow Central is about 2 miles from the site. See http://tinyurl.com/b6x96jo for the best walking route. Alternatively the 212 bus goes frequently from Walthamstow Central to Wadham Road just a little bit along from the sports centre.

On foot

The Peter May Sports' Ground is 15 minutes walk from Highams Park Station. Once at the end of Winchester Road walk half way down Wadham Road and the gate to the site is half way along on the right after Wadham Cafe.

By road

The entrance to the grounds are in Wadham Road which runs parallel to the A406. If using the A406 then come off at Billet Roundabout and turn up Wadham Road. Do not come off onto the A503 to Walthamstow as this will take you to the city centre.

Course safety

Walthamstow parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • Unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this event.
The only exception to this rule is when accompanied by an assistance dog.
  • parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.
  • Please note that no dogs are allowed at Peter May Sports Centre as these are private playing fields and London Playing Fields have stated that dogs are prohibited from the fields. Dogs are allowed at many of our other events, so if you are keen to run with your dog please refer to the events list for alternative events. The course page of each event will let you know whether dogs are allowed at the event.

We hope these tips help to ensure that Walthamstow parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
