The course

Course description

A one lap course on mostly wide (and very hilly) forest trails. The route is mostly gravel, although some sections can be muddy and slippery in wet conditions.

Participants with buggies should be aware that there are fast downhill sections and some significant uphill sections which can become boggy and cause pinch points in poor conditions. Please ensure you have appropriate equipment, give way to other participants where appropriate & contact the team in advance with any queries.

On the course

The course is 5k long. The course is at Wendover Woods, Aylesbury. The course is run on a mixture of gravel paths and trail paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

Café, toilets, large car park, children's play area, family walks and trails, cycling paths, Go Ape, BBQs and picnic areas.

More details

Public transport

Train: Wendover Station gets at least two trains per hour in each direction on the Chiltern service from Marylebone to Aylesbury. It is approx 3-mile walk (uphill!) by road from Wendover Station to the start; although short cuts through Wendover Woods are possible (at your own risk if you have a map, a good sense of direction, and are happy to scramble over rough terrain and steep inclines!).

On foot

Wendover Woods can be accessed on foot throughout the year at several points around the perimeter. Due to the nature of the site many of the access points lead to rough terrain and/or steep inclines. Access can be gained from the Upper Icknield Way B4009.

By road

Access to the site is via a gated road from the public highway. The gate will be opened at 8am by a member of Forestry England staff.

From Wendover take the B4009 towards Tring, take the right hand turn approximately 1 mile north of RAF Halton, signposted Wendover Woods and St. Leonards. The main entrance to the woods is then a further 300metres on the right.

From the A41, take the Wendover exit (also signed Dunstable) and take the B4009 towards Aston Clinton. Take the first left towards Wendover Woods and St Leonards. The main entrance is then a further 300metres on the right.

Please note, that the access road from the public highway to the main car park, is just over a mile long with a 15mph speed restriction. There can also be delays entering the car park itself as there is a barrier which comes down between each car to facilitate image capture of car number plates (There is a “pay on exit” scheme in operation). Please factor this into your timing.

If using Google Maps, or similar navigation aid, please search for “Wendover Woods Car Park”.

Visitors are required to pay before leaving (card payments only), with machines located at the Forestry Information Office. Please refer to the Wendover Woods Forestry England home page for details of the current charges.

Note that volunteers qualify for free early-bird parking (departure by 11am); they should give their car registration to the Run Director on arrival, so that it can be logged with the car park system. Regular visitors may wish to consider a Wendover Woods membership, which includes free parking. More information about that is here.

Course safety

Wendover Woods parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
  • Participants with buggies should be aware that there are fast downhill sections and some significant uphill sections which can become boggy and cause pinch points in poor conditions. Please ensure you have appropriate equipment, give way to other participants where appropriate & contact the team in advance with any queries.

We hope these tips help to ensure that Wendover Woods parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
