What is the Nelson parkrun challenge?
Nelson is a historical parkrun number challenge based on event editions such as 111, 222, 333 and so on up to 999. An event's edition number counts how many times that particular parkrun has taken place; it isn't your finishing position or your personal parkrun total. Traditionally, each different Nelson number adds one to a nine-slot collection. The challenge became controversial because milestone editions could attract unexpectedly large crowds to small events. In 2023, the popular 5K app removed Nelson from its default challenges at parkrun's request. It is best viewed as a historical statistic, not a reason to overwhelm an event team.
- The event number is the edition number printed on the result.
- Each number can come from a different parkrun.
- The numbers are 111, 222, 333, 444, 555, 666, 777, 888, and 999.
- parkrun asked challenge apps to stop promoting number-chasing in 2023, because crowds can overwhelm smaller events. This remains a historical community challenge.
