The course

Course description

Starting from the Aldenham Country Park car park, the course is two clockwise loops of Aldenham reservoir, crossing the dam causeway and looping back through the woods. The first lap takes in an inner loop of the reservoir, following the waterline (turn right at the marshal point). The second, slightly shorter lap (turn left at the marshal point) cuts through a hedged pathway to the finish.

The course is run on a mixture of gravel, tarmac and muddy trails. We would describe it as a "trail" course, and there are lots of tree roots and uneven surfaces, so please watch your footing. Following wet weather it can get very muddy in the woods, and we often have puddles on the course. A change of shoes and socks for after the event is often advisable. Please note our course runs adjacent to a farm park. Participants should be mindful of hand hygiene, especially in the event of an injury / cut / graze. There are toilets in the car park where hands can be washed.

On the course

The course is 5k long. The course is in Aldenham Country Park, Elstree. The course is run on a mixture of dirt paths, grass and pavement. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

There are toilets (including disabled toilets and baby change facilities) in the car park near to the exit barrier. There are racks for locking bikes, picnic tables, and a children's play park (please check opening hours, and please note an entrance fee applies).

There is also a farm park with animals and other visitor attractions - details can be found on Aldenham Country Park's website. There is a cafe, and a kiosk selling drinks and snacks. Please note there are few bins on site. Please take litter home with you.

Please see below for information on car parking.

More details

Public transport

Train: Elstree and Borehamwood is the nearest train station, which is 3km (about 40 minutes) from the country park.

Train: 107 to Elstree Village from Elstree and Borehamwood station. However we strongly recommend using the traveline.info website where you can enter your journey details using the postcode WD6 3BA.
The nearest bus stop is by the Fishery Bar on Elstree Road. You can enter directly into the Country Park opposite the bar and use the lakeside path to walk around to the car park where the run begins. The walk is about 1.2km (15 mins).

On foot

The park can be accessed on foot via Dagger Lane, Aldenham Road and Watford Road.

By road

The country park is located on Aldenham Road, post code WD6 3BA. It can be reached via the A5, A41, A1(M) or M1 (J5). Look for the brown signs on nearby roads.

parkrun participants must pay for car parking at Aldenham Country Park. There is a car park barrier on entering the park with number plate recognition technology. Participants should come through this barrier, then pay at the exit barrier using a contactless method after they have participated in parkrun. The exit fee is £5.50. We suggest using a bank card / credit card to pay, as we have had reports of Apple pay / Google pay not working. If you wish to pay in cash, an exit code can be purchased from the Farm Shop from Aldenham Country Park staff (same price).

Please be aware the roads adjacent to Aldenham Country Park are not suitable to park on. Anyone who wishes to avoid car parking charges should travel by public transport or cycle to the event, or car share where feasible.

If you have any problems with car parking during your visit to Aldenham parkrun, please liaise with the Run Director in the first instance.

Course safety

Aldenham parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • It is not permitted to run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
  • parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.

We hope these tips help to ensure that Aldenham parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
