The course

Course description

Our 4 lap course starts on the tarmac drive near the main entrance of the park and heads uphill past the cafe towards the far exit. Just before the exit, the route doubles back onto the compacted gravel nature trail, leading behind the cafe and through the woods. The trail drops left back into the main park and forms a T junction with a permanent footpath. Ahead of you is a wooden barrier leading to the playground. Turn right at this T junction.

Follow the path and bear left at the next junction to stay in Ford Park. You are now on the permanent perimeter path which follows the outer wall of the park. Follow the perimeter path anti-clockwise.

Cross the main driveway and continue to follow the perimeter path around the field edge and into the car park. Cross diagonally, through the hedge and bear left onto a short track through the trees. At the end of this track, take a left turn onto the main driveway and follow this downhill past the car park entrance to the main park entrance. Here you will double back onto the gravel path that runs parallel with the driveway. As you pass the starting point, you will have completed 1 lap!

Please stay on the gravel path and opposite the car park entrance follow the path round to the left going uphill. At the path junction ahead bear right and then right again as you enter the woods. Drop down and turn left onto the driveway. Repeat this route in full 4 times. At the very end of your 4th lap, as you travel down the drive towards the main park entrance, you will enter the finish funnel on your left.

The course is not suitable for double buggies due to narrow sections.

On the course

The course is 5k long. The course is at Ford Park, Ulverston. The course is run on a mixture of tarmac paths, trail paths and grass. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

A natural playground, nature trail, plant nursery and garden, toilets. The cafe caters for vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan dietary requirements.

More details

Public transport

To arrive by bus we recommend using the Stagecoach website as times may vary. Please use the X6 service from Barrow and Dalton and from the Kendal direction. Please use the Lakes Glass Centre bus stop and follow the directions by car to arrive at the park.

From the railway station, turn left onto Prince’s Street and then at the traffic lights turn right onto County Road. You will need to cross the road at one of the crossings and then at the main roundabout please continue straight on. You should come to some more traffic lights and will be able to see the Swann Inn and Swan chinese on your left. You can now follow the directions by car.

On foot

From the bottom of Market Street (near the roundabout) in the town centre please follow Union Street (near Lloyds bank) for 150m and continue straight ahead onto Hart Street. Follow Hart Street for 400m and then bear slight left onto Ford Park Crescent. In 200m you will find the entrance to Ford Park and the start area is at the top of the Drive.

By road

Our postcode is LA12 7JP but please follow the guide below as some Sat Nav systems will take you to the wrong place.

Ford Park is situated just below the Sir John Barrow Monument, on Hoad Hill. From the M6 take the A590 towards Barrow. To find us you will continue towards Barrow and pass Booths supermarket. At the next set of lights turn right off the A590 into Swan Street, you’ll see the Swan Inn and the Swan chinese take away on your left. Go about 300yds and turn right into Ford Park Crescent, continue driving and you will see the entrance to the park ahead.

If you wish to use Ford Park's car park please drive through the entrance gates and follow the single track tarmac drive to the car park, which is on the right hand side opposite the play area. Please be aware that the car park and drive will be closed from 8:45 until after parkrun has finished. A £1 donation is suggested for parking here; there is an honesty box for cash or a QR code is also available.

Arrangements have been made with St Mary’s Hospice which is just outside the grounds (LA12 7JP) and Booths supermarket which is mentioned in the above directions. Please park and follow directions by car to arrive at Ford Park. Please allow 10-15 minutes if walking from Booths.

Course safety

Ford parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • It is not permitted to run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
  • parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.
  • The course is not suitable for double buggies due to narrow sections.

We hope these tips help to ensure that Ford parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
