The course
Course description
Two laps of a Y shaped course using a tarmac section of the Ely Trail and the Northern Boundary Path of Grangemoor Park. The course is fairly flat and of an "out & back" nature, with five 180 degree turns in total. Please keep to the right hand side and refrain from overtaking on sections where you can't see clearly ahead. Single file may be needed at times.
We typically have a few participants with buggies and welcome a visually impaired parkrunner (with a guide) on a regular basis. Some weeks there can one or more participants going round with a dog. As per parkrun requirements a four-legged friend must be on a short, hand-held and non extendable lead. They also need to be comfortable in close proximity to others with a regular flow of people from the opposite direction (approaching on your left).
The layout of our course means that you will see all other participants, including the marshals, multiple times. This feature is especially popular with groups of friends or relatives of different standards, and those who include some who are choosing to volunteer, because of the opportunities to offer encouragement.
On the course
The course is 5k long. The course is at Grangetown, Cardiff. The course is run entirely on tarmac paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.
Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.
Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.
Facilities
- Access to the river for fishing (with a licence from the harbour authority) and a network of trails on the mound with great views from the top.
- Grangemoor Park has no toilets, some of the businesses in the area have customer facilities which you may be able to use.
- Bike racks are available under the A4232 flyover, adjacent to the finish.
- There are several options for a post parkrun coffee. Our participants support a range of businesses including Cardiff Wellness Lounge (Wilcox House), Coffi Co (Bayscape), Costa (in the Retail Park) & Starbucks (Dunleavy Drive). IKEA and Morrisons have customer restaurants where it's possible to have coffee, or a more substantial breakfast.
More details
Public transport
- Plan in advance - you may need to leave earlier than you'd think! Starbucks and McDonalds are open for pre parkrun coffee should you need to arrive significantly ahead of when we'll be gathering for the event.
- Cardiff Bus Route 9 serves the Grangemoor Peninsular in a one way circuit from Asda to Morrisons and the Sports Village, returning along Dunleavy Drive. It's quickest to alight behind Asda when heading to the event.
- First Cymru Route 304 from Cardiff to Llantwit Major also serves the stop behind Asda and outside Morrisons.
- Some Cardiff Bus Routes to & from Penarth (93 & 94) stop close to the Ely Trail at "Brindley Road", about half a mile from our start area.
- We're approximately 1 mile from Cogan train station, or 1.5 miles from Grangetown.
On foot
From Asda Cardiff Bay walk towards the petrol station and then along Dunleavy Drive, passing Starbucks on your left. Continue until you reach the roundabout, go straight over and head through the stone chicane into the park. We gather and start 200m up Ely Trail, round to your right.
By road
We must stress the importance of parking considerately. Unless you have explicit permission (for delivering kit), DO NOT use the small area off Dunleavy Drive roundabout.
Asda have been tolerant of parkrunners using some of the spaces away from their store entrance over towards the petrol station (CF11 0JR). Those intending to visit Starbucks on Dunleavy before or after the event often use some of their car park - it's very important that spaces remain for other customers.
If you enjoy a decent warm up there are options slightly further away, such as the main Sports Village Car Park between the International Pool and White Water (CF11 0JS), the open air section at IKEA (CF11 0XR) or Morrisons (CF11 0JP).
Virtually all local car parks are intended for customers of the adjacent businesses, most have stay limits with ANPR enforcement and/or other conditions. Do not overstay. Please be mindful of the impact of where you park and aim to support adjacent businesses with your custom.
Coffee
Every week we grab a post-parkrun coffee: a local cafe. Please come and join us!

Course safety
Grangemoor parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:
- Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
- Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
- Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
- We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
- Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
- Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
- Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
- If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
- If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
- It is not permitted to run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.
- Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
- You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
- parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.
We hope these tips help to ensure that Grangemoor parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
