The course

Course description

The course is made up of 3 and ¾ laps of Llanishen Park offering a variety of surfaces - tarmac, gravel and grass. Each lap is a circuit of the non-wooded section of the park resembling a figure-eight. You will initially complete three full laps. Then, on the fourth - turn left at the marshal point adjacent to Ty Glas Avenue gate and head to the finish. You are advised to take care as some sections of the course can become muddy, especially in poorer weather.

Due to the terrain parts of the course may make it harder for people with buggies & pushchairs - please contact the team in advance for further information.

On the course

The course is 5k long. The course is at Llanishen Park, Cardiff. The course is run on a combination of grass, gravel paths and permanent paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.

Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.

Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.

Facilities

The park is equipped with a children’s play area (note: this is unsupervised) and a small wooded area, which is perfect for a pleasant post-parkrun cooldown walk. Toilet facilities are available at Llanishen Leisure Centre and Morrisons Ty Glas, where parking is recommended.

More details

Public transport

Bus: The Llanishen Village and Ty Glas areas are well served by local bus routes. Cardiff bus numbers 27 and 28 run regular services to the area, as do their NAT equivalents. You should request a ticket for one of Llanishen Village, Ty Glas Avenue, Newborough Avenue, Templeton Avenue or Thornhill Road (near the Nine Giants Pub) stops, depending on your route/operator and proceed on foot.

Train: There are a number of train stations nearby also: Llanishen (on the Rhymney line, 0.7miles away) and Ty Glas (on the Coryton line, 0.8miles away) are both a relatively quick jog or reasonable walk to the park. Please check directions beforehand if new to the area and ensure you leave sufficient time to get to the park in time for briefings (8.50am) and the start.

On foot

There are five access points to the park - on Llangranog Road, two on White Barn Road, one on Ty Glas Avenue (opposite the old Tax Office complex) and the main gate on Newborough Avenue.

From Llanishen Village, the park is a short walk away. Head west on Ty Glas Avenue before heading right onto Newborough Avenue. The main entrance to the park is on your left shortly after you turn into the street.

From our recommended car parks, we suggest using the Ty Glas Avenue entrance, which is the southernmost point of the park.

  • From the leisure centre, take a brief walk along the back of the Gleider field and cross the road at the pelican crossing once you emerge from the grassed area. The entrance is opposite.
  • From Morrisons, you will be approaching from the other direction; walk along Ty Glas Road eastward until you reach one of the pedestrian crossings, which you should use. The entrance to the park will be marked as you approach the junction with Ty Glas Avenue.
By road

The main thoroughfare for the area is Caerphilly Road/Thornhill Road which is part of the A469 that eventually runs over Caerphilly mountain headed north. This is easily accessible from Junction 32 of the M4 at Coryton. From here, you can gain access to the park itself and car parking by taking the 1st exit (if heading south) or the 4th exit (if heading north) at roundabout adjacent to Ty Glas Morrisons.

For car parking, you should follow directions to Llanishen Leisure Centre at CF14 5EB, or to Ty Glas Morrisons at CF14 5EP. Other car parks are available, though may be restricted - it is recommended that you research ahead of time so that you do not risk a parking fine. Please do not drive into Llanishen Park as parking is unlikely to be available and you may cause unnecessary danger to other parkrunners making their way to the start. We encourage participants to travel sustainably - by public transport, on foot or by bike - if they can.

We appreciate that this isn’t always possible, so if arriving by car please either use parking at Ty Glas Morrisons or Llanishen Leisure Centre (you will need to check in at the reception desk); both are a short walk away from the Ty Glas Avenue entrance to the park.

We kindly ask that parkrunners do not leave their vehicles on the streets nearby or in the park itself. Good relations with our lovely neighbours are extremely important for the success of our community event. Please contact the organising team beforehand if you believe you will need support.

Course safety

Llanishen Park parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:

  • Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
  • Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
  • Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
  • We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
  • Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
  • Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
  • Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
  • If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
  • If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
  • It is not permitted to run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.
  • Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
  • You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
  • parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.

We hope these tips help to ensure that Llanishen Park parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
