The course
Course description
The course is a 1.2k out and back followed by a 3.8k out and back, starting and finishing on the promenade between the beach huts and toilets at Eastney. Turning point one is around 120m west of the Yomper statue, turning point 2 is just by the start/finish funnel, and turning point 3 is around 120m east of Southsea Beach Café. With the exception of the final 100m when approaching the finish funnel, participants should keep left at all times to make way for the public and participants coming in the opposite direction. When overtaking slower participants, faster participants should keep to the extreme left leaving slower participants more the centre left of the middle of the prom. Participants must not use the adjacent cycle lane at any time during the event.
Participants will be asked to gather on the shingle beach between the beach huts and toilets at Eastney for the pre-event briefing, before being called up the ramp to enter the start funnel in groups according to expected finish time. Participants in wheelchairs, with buggies, or who are otherwise unable to move to the beach should remain on the prom during the briefing and join the start funnel when their expected finish time is called.
On the course
The course is 5k long. The course is along Southsea promenade, starting and finishing on the prom between the beach huts and toilets at Eastney (postcode PO4 9NB; what3words ///driven.thanks.crab). The course is run entirely on paved esplanade. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.
Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event.
Please, wherever possible walk, jog, cycle or use public transport when attending the event. If you do have to drive, please consider car-sharing to reduce our impact on both the environment and other park users. Please also watch out for other park users when arriving and leaving. Parking may be limited so try to arrive early.
Facilities
- The nearest public toilets are just by the muster area and start/finish line at Eastney (where the promenade heads inland to become Henderson Road).
- There is a coffee van located on the prom by the muster area, and there are many options for coffee, and brunch around Canoe Lake, South Parade Pier, and the Pyramids Leisure Centre.
More details
Public transport
Portsmouth is a small city with a big population, we would actively encourage those coming from outside to use public transport if possible. Temporary hire of E-scooters and E-bikes is currently available across the city for those who meet the conditions of hire. You are advised to register here and download the appropriate app in advance.
Train: The closest train station is Fratton which is approximately 2.75km from the start (via Goldsmith Avenue, Bransbury Park, and east along Henderson Road).
Bus: The nearest bus stop is the Ferry Road stop (outside the Henderson Mobile Home Park) which is served by the 25 route. From here, the start is a 5 min walk southbound along Henderson Road, going past the Cockleshell Community Centre. Several bus routes also terminate at South Parade Pier. From here, the start is approximately a 20 min walk, heading eastward along the prom for around 2km.

Course safety
Southsea parkrun is a fun, free event organised by volunteers for the benefit of everyone. We wish to make the event as safe as possible, so participants, spectators and helpers are asked to take care about the following:
- Please be considerate to the park and other park users at all times.
- Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) throughout the event by a parent, guardian or appropriate adult of the parent's choice.
- Please arrive by foot, by pedal-power or by public transport if you can - your efforts help to reduce our impact on the park and the planet.
- We invite everyone to consider volunteering at parkrun. Your support helps your parkrun events remain sustainable and free for all in your community, and it’s also a wonderful way to improve your own health and happiness. Please visit the volunteer page for more information.
- Take care near roads and car parks – some vehicles drive very quickly. Please congregate away from the cars and be careful in particular if you have children. If you’re driving to the event, please drive carefully.
- Take care on uneven surfaces – whether on grass or on tarmac. Watch out for cyclists, other participants, pedestrians, children, dogs, wildlife, park animals, vehicles, park maintenance work, falling branches, bollards, posts and other obstacles around the course.
- Please ensure that you are fit enough to walk, jog, run 5k (3.1 miles) with us.
- If you see someone with a serious problem, please stop to help them out and get help as soon as possible.
- If you’re watching, keep clear of participants on the course, and look after any children and dogs you may have with you.
- It is not permitted to run with a pushchair and a dog at the same time.
- Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks. Consider protecting yourself by wearing repellent when at parkrun events in grassy or wooded areas. See lymediseaseuk.com for further details.
- You are welcome to take part with one dog by your side, within reach at all times, on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead. The use of waist harnesses is prohibited. Please also see this Support Site entry for further details about parkrunning with dogs.
- parkrunners pushing buggies are welcome, but please take care of others around you and do your best to start at an appropriate place in the field for your pace.
We hope these tips help to ensure that Southsea parkrun is fun and safe for everyone.
